Homemade Potato Cannon

Okay the 4th of July is approaching fast. Here is a nice little cannon that launches potatoes at a considerable velocity. Using simple tools and common materials, you too can enter the world of backyard ballistics. The potato cannon uses either pneumatic compression or a combustible aerosol such as hairspring to propel the veggies down the PVC pipe. ;) Just be careful or you will shoot your eye out. These are NOT toys!!! One smartass kid was putting frogs down the barrel and launching them till the gun jammed. Einstein put his face over the barrel to see what was up and the frog fired, fracturing his face and blinding him for life in both eyes. Not kewl!!!

Check it out here - This website also sells kits if you don't have the skillz to do it yourself.

Micro FM Transmitters

Here is a neat project for designing little FM transmitters to spy on your friends or the Boss at the office. These can be built very inexpensively and tuned in on any FM radio. The trasmitters operate on a frequency range of 88 to 108 MHz. They are similar to he ones they sell at Radio shack. I have used several commercial ones, and the range is pretty good depending on the length of the attenea.

DIY Air Conditioner

Okay this heat wave has finally broken, but it won't be long before the next wave of 90+ temperatures makes life a little more difficult. Most of us have AC units or central air to cope with the heat, but if u don't or if you want to be a cheap bastard and build your own for around $25 bucks. Then here are some plans on how to do it. The homebrew AC unit will cool a room to a comfortable level in 15-20 mins, and will run for a few hours on a garbage pail full of water.

Build a Skype Phone

Here is a neat little project using the free program Skype and an old cordless phone. For those of you unfamiliar with Skype, I will school you. Skype is a free program that allows users with broadband connections to make free phone calls over the internet. Normally one would use a headset or a microphone and the speakers on the PC to send and receive voice, but by using an old phone and modifying it, you can make regular calls using the handset like a normal call.

What is BitTorrent you ask? BitTorrent is simply a file distribution tool. Large files are broken down into smaller pieces, and then shared among many users. What does this mean? Well it means you can find practically anything you want online. This is the method that Pirates used to release Star Wars Revenge of the Sith out onto the net. In order to utilize BitTorrent, you need a BitTorrent client. Just note that allot of the stuff up there is copyrighted stuff and downloading it may infringe on copyright laws.

Here is a simple transmitter that when connected to a phone line, will transmit anything on that line (execpt the dial tone) to any FM radio. The frequency can be tuned from 88 to about 94Mhz and the range is about 200 feet. It is extremely easy to build and is therefore a good, useful beginner project.

Wire, Circuit Board

1. L1 is 7 turns of 22 AWG wire wound on a 9/64 drill bit. You may need to experiment with the number of turns.
2. By stretching and compressing the coils of L1, you can change the frequency of the transmitter. The min frequency is about 88 Mhz, while the max frequency is around 94 Mhz.
3. The green wire from the phone line goes to IN1. The red wire from the phone line goes to IN2. The green wire from OUT1 goes to the phone(s), as well as the red wire from OUT2.
4. The antenna is a piece of thin (22 AWG) wire about 5 inches long.
5. All capacitors are rated for 250V or greater.
6. The transmitter is powered by the phone line and is on only when the phone is in use. S1 can be used to turn the transmitter off if it is not needed.
7. If you have problems with the LED burning out, then add a 300 ohm 1/4W resistor in series with it.

Enjoy ;)

How to Pick a Good Online Password

Here is a technique to pick easy-to-remember passwords, that are hard-to-guess for your favorite web sites:

You can customize passwords for every site in the same way. For example, if your name is David Webb and your favorite number is 69, simply incorporate that into every password. You can also use a certain number of letters from the site. Want to login to Yahoo? Maybe your password is db69yahoo. How about Hotmail? dw69hotmail, etc.

Another technique is to pick the upper right key on the keyboard for every letter of a common word you will not forget. So, for example. If your child's name was Susy. You would pick an E for the S, an 8 for the U and so on. The password would be e8e7. As long as you do not forget the word or the upper right key to encode it you are golden.

Hope this helps....Of course you could always give your password for safe keeping ;)
